Connected to the mainland by a causeway, The Isle of Portland juts out three miles into the English Channel. This elevated and isolated position makes the island one of Europe's premier bird watching sites and boasts a species list of over 350.

During the winter a small group of Purple Sandpipers gather at the 'Bill', the rocky southerly point; with the right weather conditions, these agile shorebirds can be photographed feeding amongst the rocks at low tide.
